Seeking God's Wisdom Before Making Decisions
Every business leader faces decisions. Some are simple. Others determine the future of a company, the livelihood of employees, or even the direction of a family.
Throughout my business career, I made it a practice to open leadership and employee meetings with prayer, asking God for wisdom and guidance. I didn’t pray because it was expected—I prayed because I believed He would answer.
When we sincerely seek God’s will for our businesses, He is glorified. He often replaces anxiety with peace, uncertainty with clarity, and, without saying a word, our dependence upon Him becomes a testimony to our employees, leadership teams, customers, and business partners.
The world tells us to trust our experience, rely on data, seek expert advice, and make the most logical choice. While those things certainly have value, Scripture reminds us that the greatest source of wisdom is not found in ourselves—it is found in God.
As an entrepreneur, I was never the most academic person in the room. Instead, God gave me the ability to recognize opportunities—what I often call “gold tail squirrels.” Those exciting ideas have a way of capturing an entrepreneur’s attention and tempting us to chase one opportunity after another.
I learned that before chasing the next ‘gold tail squirrel,’ I needed to stop and ask God for wisdom and direction. I have complete confidence that He is a far better businessman than I will ever be.
There were times I listened carefully to His leading, and looking back, I can clearly see how He protected me from decisions that could have ended badly. There were other times when I prayed, but then moved ahead with my own plans anyway. Those decisions didn’t always produce the outcome I expected.
One lesson I’ve learned over more than three decades in business is this:
I have never regretted waiting on God’s wisdom, but I have regretted moving ahead without it.
There is an important distinction between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is the accumulation of facts. Wisdom is the God-given ability to apply those facts according to His will.
King Solomon understood this better than anyone. When God gave him the opportunity to ask for anything, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people well. Because his request reflected a humble heart, God blessed him with wisdom beyond measure—and with many other blessings as well.
As Christian business leaders, we should approach every important decision the same way.
Before asking, “What makes the most business sense?“
We should first ask, “Lord, what would YOU have me do?“
God already knows the outcome of every decision we will ever face. Seeking His wisdom is not a sign of weakness—it is an act of faith.
MONDAY MORNING APPLICATION
Reflection
- Have I sincerely asked God for wisdom before moving forward?
- Am I seeking God’s direction, or am I merely asking Him to bless a decision I’ve already made? I know from experience that seeking His direction has always produced the better outcome.
- Will this decision honor Christ regardless of the financial outcome? Money is important in business, but your Christian witness is worth far more than gold.
- Is fear, pride, or pressure influencing my judgment? When Christ is truly at the center of our business lives, we can move forward with confidence and boldness.
God delights in giving wisdom to those who genuinely seek Him. That is not simply a hope—it is His promise.
This Week’s Challenge
Before making any important business decision this week, pause and spend a few moments in prayer.
Ask God for wisdom and guidance before seeking advice from anyone else.
Then trust Him enough to follow where He leads.
Leadership Principle
The wisest business decision is not always the one that makes the most sense on paper.
It is the one made after seeking the wisdom of God.
PRAYER & FINAL THOUGHTS
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for promising to give wisdom generously to those who ask.
Help me to seek Your guidance before relying on my own understanding. Give me discernment to recognize Your leading and the courage to obey, even when Your direction differs from my own plans.
May every decision I make honor You, serve others well, and reflect my trust in Your perfect wisdom.
