God Owns It—I Steward It
Starting my first business was an act of faith as a new Christian at age 29. I wanted to build a business, but even more, I wanted to glorify God through it. I never really considered failure. Looking back, I realize that confidence came more from faith than experience.
There were seasons when I viewed the business as mine instead of God’s. Yep, I’m just as human as the next guy. In those seasons I was never truly at rest. Looking back, I understand why—I was carrying a burden I was never intended to carry. Owners carry the weight differently than stewards. When I remembered it was God’s business, I could work diligently while trusting Him with what only He could control.
Over time I began to understand why Scripture continually reminds us that everything belongs to God. He owns the resources. He provides the opportunities. He gives the abilities. He opens and closes doors according to His perfect will.
All of this is much easier to see in hindsight, but learning to lead with a steward’s heart takes time, prayer, surrender, and faith. As stewards, we manage God’s business. That changes how we hire people, serve customers, handle finances, make investments, and even define success.
- If God owns it, I should ask Him how He wants it managed.
- If God owns it, profit becomes a responsibility rather than a prize.
- If God owns it, people become eternal souls rather than simply employees or customers.
- If God owns it, success is measured not merely by growth, but by faithfulness to His calling.
I’ve learned that God isn’t looking for perfect business owners. He’s looking for faithful stewards—and becoming one is the work of a lifetime.
Faithful stewardship is not a destination. It is a lifetime of learning to release a little more control back to God each day.
One day every one of us will give an account—not for how much we accumulated—but for how faithfully we managed what He temporarily entrusted to us.
Now that’s a sobering thought.
MONDAY MORNING APPLICATION
Reflection
- Do I truly believe my business belongs to God?
- Am I managing His resources the way He would want?
- Are my business decisions driven by ownership or stewardship?
- If Christ walked into my office today, would He recognize His priorities in the way I lead?
If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, don’t be discouraged. The Holy Spirit is often most at work where He first brings conviction. Stewardship is learned one surrendered decision at a time.
This Week’s Challenge
Several times this week, intentionally replace the word ‘my’ with ‘God’s.’ Instead of saying ‘my business,’ think ‘God’s business entrusted to my care.’ Allow that simple change in perspective to influence every decision you make. Let’s turn the reflection questions above into bold YESes.
Leadership Principle
Ownership seeks control.
Stewardship seeks faithfulness.
PRAYER & FINAL THOUGHTS
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for entrusting me with opportunities, relationships, resources, and responsibilities that ultimately belong to You.
Help me never confuse stewardship with ownership. Teach me to manage every employee, customer, dollar, opportunity, and decision as one who will someday give an account to You.
May my business always reflect Your priorities instead of my own ambitions.
