Honoring Christ in ALL You Do – with Your Life and Your Business

Commit Before You Build

Proverbs 16:3 (KJV) "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." Psalm 37:5 (KJV) "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass."

Every business owner or leader has plans. Those plans may include growing a company or department, pursuing larger opportunities, accepting greater responsibility, improving cash flow, increasing margins, or simply earning a better living for your family. But without planning—and more importantly, commitment—those goals rarely become reality.

As we grow spiritually while striving to grow professionally, Scripture encourages us to commit our work to the One who has entrusted it to us.

Before God blesses our plans, however, He first asks us to surrender them. Biblical commitment always begins with surrender. It means recognizing that everything we have—our businesses, abilities, opportunities, and resources—ultimately belongs to Him.

I must admit that surrender has always been one of my greatest struggles. Yet as I have grown in my walk with Christ, surrender has become one of God’s greatest gifts in my life. What once felt like weakness has become a source of freedom. Loosening my grip has allowed God to lead me professionally, personally, and spiritually in ways I never could have accomplished on my own. That’s by our Creator’s design.

The Principle

Proverbs 16:3 was given to me by my wife, Jo, shortly after I started my first business as a young Christian in 1998. At the time, I had no idea how profoundly that single verse would shape the next three decades of my business life—through seasons of growth, difficult negotiations, personnel challenges, unexpected opportunities, and disappointing setbacks.

Looking back, it’s easy to see God’s faithful hand in every season. His faithfulness was never dependent upon my circumstances.

Proverbs 16:3 is not a promise that every business decision will produce immediate success. It is a promise that when we continually place our work, ambitions, and plans before the Lord—when we truly commit them to Him—He faithfully establishes our thinking according to His purposes.

Over time we discover that God’s plans are often very different from our own—and far more remarkable than we could have imagined. As we remain committed to Him and willing to yield to His direction, we begin to see His hand at work in ways we never could have orchestrated ourselves.

One lesson God continues to teach me is this: Commitment is more than dedication. It is surrender. It is trusting Him enough to place our business, our dreams, our successes, and even our disappointments into His hands, believing that His plans are always better than our own.

As we faithfully follow Him, we begin to recognize His abundant grace and love woven throughout both our personal lives and our businesses.

MONDAY MORNING APPLICATION

Memory Verse

Proverbs 16:3 (KJV)
“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”

Application

  • Begin your morning by committing your work and plans to the Lord before opening your email or calendar.
  • View yourself as a steward rather than the owner of what God has entrusted to you.
  • Seek God’s wisdom before relying on your own experience.
  • Measure success by faithfulness and obedience, trusting God with the results.
  • Keep a journal of your prayers, requests, challenges, praises, and blessings. Remember that God’s timing is not always our timing, and His answers are often better than the ones we expected.

Reflection Question

Have I truly surrendered my business to God, or am I still trying to control what ultimately belongs to Him?

This Week’s Challenge

Tomorrow morning, before checking email, reviewing financial reports, or attending your first meeting, pray Proverbs 16:3 and Psalm 37:5 over your business. Intentionally commit every decision, opportunity, and challenge to the Lord, trusting Him to establish your thoughts and direct your path.

PRAYER & FINAL THOUGHTS

Father, thank You for entrusting me with the opportunity to steward this business for Your glory. Give me wisdom to make decisions that honor You, courage to obey when Your direction differs from my own, and faith to trust You with every outcome. Teach me what true commitment looks like by helping me surrender every plan into Your hands. Establish my thoughts as I commit my work to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Business isn’t ultimately about building wealth; it’s about building faithfulness.

Financial success may be the result of operating a business well, but we must never forget that we are only stewards of everything God has entrusted to us—including our wealth.

Enjoy the blessings God provides, but don’t allow them to become the focus. Instead, commit a portion of what He has entrusted to you to advancing His Kingdom. The return on that investment will last for eternity.

Grace & Peace,
